As you have probably heard in the news, in June of 2022, the United States Supreme Court struck down a New York law requiring gun owners to show “proper cause” for carrying a handgun in public, for self-defense or otherwise. If you are a New Jersey resident gun owner or looking to become a gun owner, it’s important for you to understand what the SCOTUS ruling on guns means for NJ, and how you as a state resident can legally own a gun and protect yourself.
What The SCOTUS Ruling On Guns Means For NJ: Pre- and Post- SCOTUS Ruling
The state of New Jersey, prior to the Supreme Court ruling, had a long-existing provision of “justifiable need” for gun ownership and concealed carry permits. New Jersey is ranked among the highest in the country in its strict gun laws…rules for gun ownership include: gun buyers need to be over 21, have no criminal record, and must show specific threats to their life for a concealed handgun permit. Potential gun buyers also need multiple endorsements for their character, and demonstrated familiarity with handguns.
These laws at the moment still apply, and carrying a handgun without a permit is still illegal in the state. So if you are a New Jersey resident who believes in the need to own a gun for your own and your family’s protection, you have to go through the necessary steps. These steps include background checks that ensure you do not fall under potentially violent threat demographics. Your permit to carry is handled through the New Jersey State Police.
For a rifle or a shotgun, you will need a firearms purchaser identification card. For a handgun, you will need a permit. You will also need these certifications to buy ammunition. Your permit is good for 90 days and the purchase of one handgun.
